The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian

Laurel is a woman working as a social worker at a homeless shelter. She is dealing, -although not completely adequately-, with a violent incident from her college days. Laural meets a homeless man who she discovers may have an indirect tie to her past. Bobbie Crocker has a box of photographs that depict famous people and additionally keys into Laurel's interest in photography. On assignment to publicize the homeless shelter and illuminate the stories of their clients, Laurel digs into the Bobbie's history, identity and his photographs. In a thriller that weaves together stories of literary characters; Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, coincidentally from Laurel's childhood neighborhood and the Gatsby heirs, Laurel is on a chase that may involve her and a deep hidden family secret. Even the title: A Double Bind reveals information.
